A few minutes before the vote to confirm Betsy De Vos as the next Secretary of Education, Sen. Al Franken nailed it when he said, “If we cannot set aside party loyalty long enough to perform the essential duty of vetting the president’s nominees, what are we even doing here? Let’s do our job, for the sake of the children, for the sake of our nation’s future.”
In voting to confirm De Vos (and many other unqualified Trump nominees), Senators Burr and Tillis confirmed a few other things as well. They confirmed that their votes can be bought, that they do not care about our children or their education, and that they’re willing to have a federal agency led by a person whose only qualification is that they are a wealthy donor to Republican politicians. They chose party over country. They and their Republican colleagues (including Mike Pence and Donald Trump) should be ashamed – but, by all appearances, they lack the scruples. We and our children deserve better.
